Special Program for Church Music Directors

 and Worship Leaders

Saturday, April 24, 2010

Our first workshop held January 30th was a great success.

Plan on attending the second session.

Examples of “musically-blended” worship services are the focus of the second session of a series on hymnody and church music, sponsored by the Ecumenical Council of San Diego County and underwritten by the Harmony and Health Foundation.

The upcoming program, scheduled for April 24, 2010 is built upon the recently conducted session at First United Methodist Church of San Diego at which a review of changing Christian music over the past five centuries was conducted by First Church’s Director of Music, Dr. Stanley Wicks, and and Mr. Robert Plimpton, church organist. Session participants were walked through the changes from Gregorian chants, through to the Protestant Reformation, 18th century musical emphases (e.g., the Wesleys), to the evangelical movements of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, through to contemporary church music of today. Many of the attendees at the session indicated that providing this historical understanding of today’s musical liturgy actually enhanced their appreciation of both traditional and contemporary music in today’s worship services.

The April 24 session is designed to build upon understandings gathered at the first session. Rather than designating church services as “traditional” or “contemporary”, the program will attempt to show that a blending of musical interests may be a way around an either/or situation that often separates age groups in worship services.

Further information about and registration for the April 24 session is available at the Ecumenical Council office at 619/238-0649. Registration is $15.00, which includes lunch.

Other programs are tentatively scheduled for July 10 and October 9, 2010.

Future Meeting Topics:

March 24, 2010 11:30 am

Our Faith, Order and Witness committee meets again in one week, on February 24, and then on March 24, as we continue to enjoy Fr. George Morelli's presentations of Eastern Orthodox spirituality. As it happens, Fr. George has been scheduled as the Protos (Principal and in this case only celebrant) of the Presanctified Divine Liturgy at St. George's Antiochian Orthodox Church on those two days (and the other Wednesdays in Lent). Fr. George has, therefore, graciously invited us to meet at his parish. If members and attenders of Faith, Order, and Witness come early they can see the service, which would fit our topic of explaining the spirituality of the Eastern Church. After our meeting, we are invited to stay for a light Middle Eastern Lenten Lunch, so an earthly incentive is provided for this continued spiritual exploration.

Presanctified Divine Liturgy, 10:30 am
Faith, Order, and Witness Committee continues its study of the book, Ages of the Spiritual Life, by Paul Evdokimov, 11:30 am
Light Lenten Lunch, 1:00 pm

St. George's Antiochian Orthodox Church
4175 Poplar St
San Diego, CA 92105

St. George's is located in the City Heights neighborhood, a few minutes off the I-805 Home Ave exit. It is served by Bus #965, the City Heights Circulator; the bus stop is at Poplar St. and Snowdrop St.
